Last year we were introducing a few of our Engineers, representing various Peikko Units. And this year we want to focus on our production people – the hands, which make Peikko products and carry the final responsibility for making our Customers happy with our quality.
We will be introducing people from different Peikko Production Units and in this article please meet Giedrius Skaburskas and Remigijus Kumpauskas from Peikko Lithuania.
GIEDRIUS SKABURSKAS, WELDER
When did you start in Peikko, and what is your position?
I have started working in Peikko Lithuania in 2016, February 25th, as a welder at the Steel Structures' Factory. In six years, I have achieved the highest competence level in the field of welder in the company and now I focus not only on improving my skills, but also on training the newcomers to welder position.
What do you like most about your job?
I always remembered why I joined this company. During the first meeting in Peikko I looked around and I was astonished: everything was placed in one-centimeter accuracy, everything was neat. This moment stuck in my head, because it showed high standards of order and good working conditions. To date, improvements and high welding standards are important here and let me grow as a professional. I am pleased that I was appointed as a teacher. I am glad that I can do it, that I can share my knowledge with others. I think that a good student must be better than the teacher, and if that happens, it means that the teacher is good as well.
What projects or products that you worked on were/are the most interesting for you?
I think one of the most memorable moments when we started making DELTABEAM®s for one of the buildings in Vilnius (S7), where some of DELTABEAM®s has to be produced with so called negative precambering.. It was really challenging, but the process went smoothly after we produced first DELTABEAM®. Such implemented projects allowed us not only to gain new knowledge, but also to successfully accept further challenges.
What was the biggest challenge in your Peikko work so far, and how did you solve it?
When we first started producing DELTABEAM®, a new welding portal arrived. That time, I volunteered to learn how to use it. Honestly, it was a difficult stage because it took a lot of time and effort to figure out, but it was worth it. I never worked with such equipment, so it gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience. I'm glad that during that time I was not afraid to take a chance and this decision really paid off.
What are your biggest interests outside working life?
In general – active leisure time. In the summertime, my family and I often go kayaking or hiking, where we spend our nights in a tent while stargazing or enjoying beautiful nature landscapes. During these trips you rely on nature, since the usual conditions are gone. Every winter, in our home or homestead backyard, I construct a homemade skating rink. Last year I bought myself a snowboard. Sometimes, you really want that adrenaline spike and I'm really glad that I challenged myself to learn snowboarding. My upcoming plan is to go kayaking in winter with my family where you are up against extreme weather conditions and nature.
REMIGIJUS KUMPAUSKAS, PRODUCTION PREPARATION MANAGER
When did you start in Peikko, and what is your position?
My start at the company was in 2014 09 19, when I started working at the Connections Factory. I started as an AJAN operator for thermal cutting machines. At that time, the position was called "Operator-Locksmith", which is the equivalent of the current "CNC operator". As a memory, I still have my first employee card (see the photo).
In April 2016, I was invited to join the team of production technologists as a software programmer (Nestix) in Connections Factory. At the end of 2017, the situation changed and I remained the only software programmer (Nestix) in all three factories. After receiving a team addition in March 2018, I resumed my work at the DELTABEAM® factory.
At the end of 2019, I joined the team of foremen at the DELTABEAM® factory as a preparation foreman. In April 2021, I started leading the preparation of DELTABEAM® and Steel Structures' Factories.
What do you like most about your job?
If I had to describe it in one word, it would be "puzzles". From small tactical production puzzles to the search for big problems and unconventional solutions to the issues.
What projects or products that you worked on were/are the most interesting for you?
I don't know if it can be called a project. Still, the most memorable time was in September 2018, when we travelled to St. Petersburg with Giedrius Ambrizas to help Peikko Unit there to start production of DELTABEAM®s. What, at first glance, seemed to be simple very quickly became quite a challenge. As it was yesterday, I still remember how I took a pile of manuals to the hotel and spent the night looking for a reason why their thermal cutting machines were not working correctly. I also remember that wonderful moment when we identified the problem.
What was the biggest challenge in your Peikko work so far, and how did you solve it?
I think the biggest challenge is the same for everyone, regardless of which unit we work in, irrespective of whether we even work in Peikko. The first strokes of COVID pandemic were a massive challenge for everyone. The ever-changing situation forced all the people to adapt and search for new solutions. Teamwork, mutual understanding and communication have become the basis of everything.
What are your biggest interests outside working life?
The list of hobbies is really long, but if I had to single out some of the biggest ones, the one where I dedicate a lot of my free time is to my CNC toys, 3D printer and milling machine. I love nature very much, and regardless of the time of the year or weather conditions, I often go on a hike or camping. The greatest passion in my life is running. For the last five years, I have been devoting a great deal of time to training. This year, I finished my first ultra-trail distance of 70 km on the Curonian Spit.
