Designing wind turbine foundations presents unique challenges, often leading to overly conservative solutions that increase costs. This white paper examines the inefficiencies in current rock-anchored foundation designs and introduces Peikko FATBAR® anchors as an efficient and cost-effective solution. It highlights the importance of collaboration between rock mechanics experts and concrete structural engineers in rock anchor foundation designs.
Traditional methods frequently underestimate rock mass behaviour, resulting in designs that require more material, costs and time than necessary. By rethinking these approaches, such as, incorporating advanced numerical modelling, this paper suggests a new way forward for the wind energy sector. The suggested methodology offers a more accurate assessment of rock mass strength, reducing the need for extensive drilling and grout usage, as an example.
Additionally, this paper provides a detailed workflow for designers, supported by validated finite element models and real geotechnical investigation data. It supports clarifying the design standards across the Nordic countries, helping to prevent misinterpretations.
