“One of our key motivations in writing this paper was self-reflection. By gaining an overview of the various circular initiatives we have taken over the years, we could evaluate which actions were most effective and where improvements were needed. Additionally, we wanted to highlight Peikko’s role as a pioneer in the circular economy, having taken practical steps toward circularity long before it became a mainstream business goal,” explains Yrjölä.
This White Paper is intended to serve not only as an account of Peikko’s journey but also as a guide for others. The aim is to show that adopting circular practices is not overly complex—any company can make progress, even with small, incremental steps. The insights shared in the White Paper, including the mistakes made along the way, can help the readers bypass common obstacles and jump directly to the actions that have proven successful for Peikko.
“At Peikko, we practice what we preach. With this White Paper, we are inviting other companies to join us towards a circular future and hopefully inspiring them for new innovations. This developmental story demonstrates that it is also important to learn by doing, even though not every idea will turn out be feasible,” Paananen says.
This paper emphasizes that while the circular economy can be initiated by a single committed individual or activist, lasting change requires the involvement and commitment of a broader network of stakeholders. We hope readers come away with a sense of empowerment and motivation, ready to take their own steps toward a more sustainable, circular future.
